Basic Blacksmithing and Metal Art

This course will provide the novice welder with the essential welding, metal working, and basic blacksmith skills needed to successfully create a metal art sculpture and obtain an AWS certification. This course will expose the student to traditional metal working technique as well as modern techniques used in metal art. The student will use a traditional open hearth and induction forge and oxy-fuel torches for heating and forming metal. 
  • Materials Required:
    Luna Community College will provide
    Personal Protective Equipment: Safety glasses, ear plugs, welding gloves, welding cap, and welding shirt . Up to $500 in metal will be provided - students will need to provide their own metal above that.

  • Basic tool kit: Measuring tape, soap stones, metal speed square, locking pliers, magnetic squares, metal torpedo level, 4’ metal level, 4 disks, and a tool bag.(Student will keep)
          The use of an Auto Darkening Welding Helmet and 4?12" grinder. Students will need to return the helmet and 4 1/2" grinder. 

  • Students are required to provide the following.
    100% Cotton bandana, FR work pants, FR shirt, and steel toed boot or leather boots, geometry kit, markers, pen, pencil, paper.
